Elmwood, N.C., Oct. 5,
1899
Dear Sister,
You wrote me of your
trouble and I also have trouble to write.
Thomas died Monday evening at 6:45
October the 2nd. I would have written you
while he was sick but I could not leave
his room long enough. He had been sick a
long time but was only confined to his
bed three weeks. He did not seem to
suffer a great deal but seemed to weaken
away. He was not conscious for some time
before he died. came after he died.
Alvs's children ren were at China Grove
at school. they came home after he died
and will stay until Monday night. I feel
so bad I can not write more. I was sorry
to hear of your trouble and hope to see
you some time in the future. with much
love I close. Your Sister, Sally Hendley
He tried to talk but
could not talk so we could understand
him. He was buried at Pleasant Hill where
Alvis's wife was buried it. is a Baptist
church about twelve miles away way. He
always said he didn't care where he was
buried. Mr. Summers, a Presbyterian
minister, preached the funeral at the
house. Henry's wife and Maud both had the
fever and none of them could come and
Horace was out in Tennesee and could not
come and Birt came and staid two days
while he was sick but his wife was sick
and he could not come back. after he died
Eddie was here most of the time and all
his family
